Beverly Hills has always been famous and wealthy.
The Native tribes of Tongva and Gabrielinos inhabited the land. The
Native Americans led a peaceful life guided by daily animistic religious
practice inspired by the blue lupine, orange poppies, red foxtail, wild
roses, fuchsia and golden rod. As recorded by Friar Juan Crespi, the
Native Americans first came in contact with Europeans on March 3, 1769.
The Europeans were greeted and offered seeds as a welcome gesture.
Unfortunately, the Natives received smallpox in return which killed off
80% of the entire tribe. The rest of the tribes were gone shortly
after due to mistreatment from European settlers. In 1838, the
Mexican governor of California deeded the land to Maria Rita, wife of a
Mexican soldier. She used the land as a ranch and set her animals to
roam freely. The land suffered many droughts and changes of
ownership all the way up until 1900. In 1906, the land was renamed
Beverly Hills after the Beverly Farms, Massachusetts. The first
hotel was built in 1912 which became the center of community life.
Beverly Hill's elegant lifestyle attracted many movie stars to the city.
The city's development greatly increased after WWII. In recent days,
the explosion of development has stopped as the city population reaches
34,000 and slowly growing. Beverly Hills is a city full of mystique,
wealth, and beauty.
